A List Apart Illustrations

“In which I draw over 350 pen, ink and watercolor illustrations. And that was the easy part.”

Between 2004 and 2014, I did over 350 drawings for the legendary online magazine A List Apart. Pictured here is a mere smattering of my favorites, but it is by no means the lion’s share.

More than any other job, A List Apart shaped my understanding of how an illustration should behave. How it should support the text, and not distract from it; how it should draw the reader in, and help guide them to the core of the article. I would spend hours trying to capture the essence of the article conceptually. By the end, the actual amount of time it took to produce the drawing was far less than the time I spent thinking about it.
